1948-49: the beginning of the India vs West Indies rivalry

West Indies toured India for the first Test series between the two countries. The opening Test in Delhi (10-14 November 1948) was drawn. West Indies made 631, India replied with 454 and followed on.

West Indies won the 4th Test at Chennai by an innings and 193 runs and took the series 1-0. The other four Tests were drawn.

Everton Weekes owned the series. He made 128, 194, 162 and 101 in the first three Tests, which stretched to five consecutive Test hundreds once you add his 141 against England in Jamaica. It’s still a world record. He finished with 779 runs at an average of 111.28, the most any batter has scored against India in a series.

For India, Rusi Modi made 560 runs and Vijay Hazare 543. Vinoo Mankad conceded 176 and 202 runs in successive innings.

1950s-60s: West Indies establish their dominance

West Indies won every Test series in this stretch, 5 of 5. They took 12 of the 23 Tests, India took none, and 11 were drawn.

SeriesHostResult
1952/53West IndiesWest Indies 1-0 (5)
1958/59IndiaWest Indies 3-0 (5)
1961/62West IndiesWest Indies 5-0 (5)
1966/67IndiaWest Indies 2-0 (3)

The 1958/59 series was brutal. Rohan Kanhai made 256 in Kolkata and West Indies won by an innings and 336 runs, still their biggest margin against India. Garry Sobers scored 557 runs and Wes Hall took 30 wickets. India used 4 captains across the 5 Tests.

The 1961/62 sweep was the first 5-0. During that tour India’s captain Nari Contractor suffered a fractured skull when Charlie Griffith hit him with a bouncer in a match at Bridgetown.

1970-71: India’s historic Test series victory in the Caribbean

India won a Test series in the West Indies for the first time. The result was 1-0 over five Tests, with India winning the 2nd Test at Port of Spain by 7 wickets and the other four drawn. Ajit Wadekar captained India and Garry Sobers captained West Indies.

Sunil Gavaskar made his debut in this series and scored 774 runs at an average of 154.80 in 4 Tests, including 4 hundreds. Dilip Sardesai made 212 at Kingston.

The series gave Indian cricket proof that it could win overseas against the best side in the world.

1970s-1980s: the era of West Indies dominance

This was the pace-bowling era, and it shows in the numbers. In Tests, West Indies won 5 series, India won 1 (1978/79) and one was drawn (1987/88). In ODIs, West Indies won all four bilateral series (1982/83, 1983/84, 1987/88, 1988/89).

India did land punches:

  • 1974/75: India trailed 0-2 and won in Kolkata (by 85 runs) and Chennai (by 100 runs) to make it 2-2. West Indies won the decider in Mumbai by 201 runs, where Clive Lloyd made 242 not out. Viv Richards made 192 not out in Delhi.
  • 1975/76: At Port of Spain, India chased 403 and won by 6 wickets (406/4). West Indies took the series 2-1.
  • 1978/79: India won at Chennai by 3 wickets and took the 6-Test series 1-0, with five draws.
  • 1987/88: India were bowled out for 75 in Delhi and lost by 5 wickets. At Chennai, debutant Narendra Hirwani took 16 for 136 and India won by 255 runs.

The 1983/84 tour was nicknamed the revenge series after the World Cup final. West Indies won the Tests 3-0 and the ODIs 5-0. Malcolm Marshall took 33 wickets, Kapil Dev took 9 for 83 at Ahmedabad and Gavaskar made 236 not out.

1983: India vs West Indies World Cup final

India beat West Indies by 43 runs at Lord’s on 25 June 1983. West Indies were two-time defending champions.

West Indies fell for 140 in 52 overs. Kapil Dev ran backwards from mid-wicket to catch Viv Richards (33 off 28 balls) off Madan Lal, and the chase never recovered. Amarnath took 3 for 12 in 7 overs and was player of the match. Madan Lal took 3 for 31 and Balwinder Sandhu 2 for 32.

It was India’s first World Cup title.

1990s: India’s growing challenge against West Indies

West Indies still had the edge in Tests, but the gap closed.

  • 1992 World Cup: West Indies won by 5 wickets (DLS) at Wellington.
  • 1993 Hero Cup final: Anil Kumble took 6 for 12 at Eden Gardens. West Indies were chasing 226 and India won by 102 runs. It’s still the best bowling in an India-West Indies ODI.
  • 1994/95 in India: The Tests were drawn 1-1. India won in Mumbai by 96 runs, and West Indies won in Mohali by 243 runs. That Mohali win is West Indies’ last Test victory in India. India won the ODI series 4-1.
  • 1996 World Cup: India won by 5 wickets at Gwalior, with Sachin Tendulkar named player of the match.
  • 1996/97 in the Caribbean: West Indies won 1-0. At Bridgetown, India were bowled out for 81 chasing 120 and lost by 38 runs.

Bilateral ODI series in this decade: India won 1994/95, West Indies won 1996/97.

2000-2010: a new era of India vs West Indies cricket

The balance flipped in Tests. West Indies won the 2002 series in the Caribbean 2-1, then India won every Test series that followed.

SeriesResult
2002 (West Indies)West Indies 2-1 (5)
2002/03 (India)India 2-0 (3)
2006 (West Indies)India 1-0 (4)

The 2006 result mattered. India hadn’t won a Test series in the West Indies for 35 years. They won the last Test at Kingston by 49 runs, with Rahul Dravid scoring 81 and 68 and Anil Kumble taking 23 wickets in the series.

ODIs were closer. West Indies won in India in 2002/03 (4-3 over 7 matches) and at home in 2006 (4-1). India won 2006/07 (3-1) and 2009 (2-1). Harbhajan Singh took 20 wickets in the 2002/03 Tests, and Tendulkar was India’s leading run-scorer in the series.

In T20, West Indies won both World T20 meetings: by 7 wickets at Lord’s in 2009 and by 14 runs at Bridgetown in 2010.

India beat West Indies by 80 runs at Chennai on 20 March 2011. India made 268 and bowled West Indies out for 188. Yuvraj Singh made 113.

It was the first World Cup meeting in 15 years. India went on to win the title, beating Sri Lanka in the final.

The same year, Virat Kohli made his Test debut at Kingston (20 June 2011), and India won that Test by 63 runs on the way to a 1-0 series win.

2016: India vs West Indies T20 World Cup semi-final

West Indies then beat England in the final at Eden Gardens, with Carlos Brathwaite hitting four sixes in the last over, and became the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice.
