Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns as India name T20I squad for New Zealand tour

The BCCI has named India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, and one name jumps off the list. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back.

It’s been almost 4 years since he last played a T20I for India. The five-match series starts on October 22, and the selectors have picked a 16-member group led by Shreyas Iyer, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain.

The squad

Captain: Shreyas Iyer. Tilak Varma is vice-captain.

Batters and keepers: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir

All-rounders: Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy

Bowlers: Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav

Most of this group will look familiar. It’s largely the same side that won Asian Games 2026 gold and is playing the T20I series against West Indies. The selectors saw a winning unit and left it alone.

Jasprit Bumrah is rested. The management has the ODI and Test series in mind, and those squads will be announced later.

The return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar is 36 now. His last T20I came against New Zealand in Napier in November 2022, which means he returns to the country where his international T20 run went quiet.

That’s a neat circle, but the selection has real cricketing logic behind it. New Zealand is windy. The pitches often carry some grass. A bowler who swings the new ball both ways gets help from the air and the surface, and that’s been Bhuvneshwar’s whole career.

His record backs it up. He debuted in December 2012 against Pakistan and was part of the India side that won the 2013 Champions Trophy. In 2022 he picked up a five-wicket haul in a T20I and was named Player of the Series against South Africa at home. Even late in his career, he was still taking wickets with the new ball.

Reports say the selectors rewarded his form in domestic cricket and the franchise league. That makes sense to me. You can’t fake swing, and you can’t hide it either. If the ball is still moving at 36, the selectors will notice.

Will he play all 5 games? Probably not. India have options, and workload will matter across a tour this long. But I’d expect him to start at least a couple of matches, especially on the greener tracks.

How the bowling attack looks

Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar give India two swing bowlers up front. Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav bring serious pace, the kind that hurries batters and makes a short ball dangerous.

Then there’s the spin pair of Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav. Axar Patel adds a third spin option who can also bat. Dube and Nitish Reddy fill the seam-bowling all-rounder slots.

It’s a balanced attack. Without Bumrah, someone else has to own the death overs, and I think that’s where Bhuvneshwar’s experience will count most. He’s bowled those overs in pressure games for more than a decade.

The batting group

Abhishek Sharma is the natural opener, and the top order has plenty of options behind him. Samson and Kishan are both wicketkeepers, so one of them will probably sit out most games unless the team plays both as specialist batters.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi keeps his place, which says plenty about how highly the selectors rate him at such a young age. Tilak Varma, now vice-captain, will anchor the middle order. Naman Dhir adds depth lower down.

Iyer has a settled squad to work with. That’s a luxury in T20 cricket.

What’s next

India have gone unbeaten in their last 7 T20Is in New Zealand, so the bar is set. The series ends on November 1 in Hamilton.

India A will also tour New Zealand for 3 multi-day matches against New Zealand A. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar are part of that squad. For More Preview of T20I Rivalry Between India and New Zealand Read India Vs NewZealand T20I Timeline

For Bhuvneshwar, the next few weeks are simple. One more chance, in conditions that suit him. If the ball swings in Auckland or Wellington, he’ll make the most of it.
